Earlier this year, the NAO Landscapes team completed the hard and soft landscaping installation at Aberfeldy Village. With works that started over a decade ago, the former estate is now unrecognisable as a new ‘Urban Village’ has been created. The project, a joint venture partnership between EcoWorld London and Poplar HARCA has formed a pioneering new neighbourhood in Poplar and improved the homes and environment of the local community. Consisting of over 1,000 new homes, multiple green spaces including courtyard gardens, and state-of-the-art community facilities, the project has already scooped numerous awards.
NAO worked closely with the project team at EcoWorld London to make this project a success. One of the key areas for the client was to include environmentally friendly features. This was achieved by implementing sustainable drainage and enhanced biodiversity, two features which will sustain the local community for years to come. The green space incorporates courtyards, a linear park creating East India Green, seating areas, trees, plants, and water features. The walkways were enriched with considered soft landscaping: flowers and plants to interest humans and attract birds and mini-beasts.
Aberfeldy Village is one of the largest regeneration projects in London and one that NAO are proud to be a part of. There are plans for further development, known as the Aberfeldy New Masterplan. A planning application was put to Tower Hamlets council but was ultimately refused in February 2023. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan reviewed the council’s decision and agreed that it should be looked at again. A final decision is yet to be made but is expected soon.
