NAO Landscapes – International Women’s Day 2024

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8th, is a global celebration of women’s achievements, progress, and the ongoing fight for gender equality. It is a day to honour the contributions of women in various fields, recognise their resilience, and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable world.

We decided to ask the women in our team some questions based on what International Women’s Day means to them and their career journeys so far.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

It is great to have a day to reflect and remind ourselves (as if we need reminding!) of the realities of the inadequacies often experienced by women, whilst celebrating their achievements. Anything which encourages open dialogue around the issues is a wonderful thing. I had no idea that International Women’s Day first started in 1911 until this week.  It is amazing to think about how things have changed for women since then. Lucy Osman – Director

What advice would you give to a young woman looking to start her career?

My advice for a young woman looking to start her career will be to clearly identify her career goals and aspirations. Understand what she is passionate about and what aligns with her values, having a clear vision will guide her decisions and actions. To believe in herself and her abilities. To learn to articulate her achievements, express her opinions, and negotiate for what she deserves. Confidence is a key factor in career success. Find a balance between her professional and personal life. Prioritize self-care and well-being. Taking care of herself will positively impact her performance and longevity in her career. In the face of setbacks or failures, stay resilient. Learn from challenges, adapt to change, and keep moving forward! Madalina Ciora – Accounts Manager

What is your proudest achievement whilst working for NAO?

As a woman working in a male-dominated industry, like construction, one of my proudest achievements has been the understanding of building and construction processes while effectively managing and building strong relations with suppliers. Despite the daily challenges, I am determined to learn and grow to improve my skills further. Laura Maier – Purchases Manager

How do you empower yourself and the women around you?

I believe that women’s empowerment is achieved by recognizing their importance in society and the lives of other people. Therefore, I practice the idea that to empower myself and the women around me is necessary self-love, self-knowledge, emotional intelligence and empathy. Make our own decisions while respecting our wishes. Practice sisterhood, without judgment. Regardless of the lifestyle that each one leads, it is important to encourage and support them so that they fight against oppression and do not worry about obeying the standards of beauty, behaviour and relationship that society demands thus each woman learns to understand the representativeness of each one. Tell us about a woman who inspires you and why!

There are several women who inspire me. Women I’ve worked with and still work with, my sister, and my friends. But without a doubt, the one that inspires me the most is my mother. A woman who with many difficulties raised her children alone, with the exhausting routine of home/work and who still taught me that we are strong, warrior women and that we can achieve whatever we want.  Pollyana Souza – Admin Assistant

By recognising the contributions of women, promoting empowerment, fostering solidarity, and embracing inclusivity, we can create a world where every woman has equal opportunities, rights, and respect.
