NAO Landscapes delivered the hard and soft landscaping for The Salvation Army’s new headquarters in Denmark Hill, south-east London. Working on a project for an organisation with a long history of supporting communities, our team helped create external spaces that are both welcoming and practical for the people who use the building.

Completed in just under six months, the landscaping package brought together a wide range of construction and planting works. The hard landscaping included paving and kerbs, a reinforced concrete retaining wall, metal edging, bollards and line marking. Drainage channels, slot drains and recessed covers were carefully integrated into the finished surfaces, alongside cycle stands and a stainless steel entrance matwell.

These elements provide durable, functional external spaces that complement the headquarters’ contemporary design and support the day-to-day movement of staff and visitors.

The soft landscaping introduced trees and planting, with new soils and mulch helping to establish the landscape. Together, the planting and hard surfaces create an inviting setting around the building, reflecting the welcoming character of The Salvation Army’s work.

With multiple hard and soft landscaping elements to coordinate, the project required a considered approach to sequencing and finishing. The completed scheme demonstrates NAO’s ability to deliver a comprehensive landscape package for a prominent institutional building, balancing technical construction requirements with an attractive, people-focused environment.
