The Stage is set – a new world-class destination for London

In 2023, NAO Landscapes completed the landscaping works at The Stage, Shoreditch for client O’Shea. The Stage is a £750m mixed-use development in Shoreditch on the site of Shakespeare’s former Curtain Theatre. A site with tonnes of history where Romeo and Juliet was first performed. It is one of the finest residential developments in the capital consisting of 412 luxury apartments rising to 37 storeys, retail units, restaurants and office buildings. Across The Stage, there is over an acre of public space for work, rest and play so the landscape needed to be accommodating for all.

The landscaping works took place over 25 weeks and were valued at £440k. The NAO team were responsible for the hard and soft landscaping on the ground floor and the viaduct. The ground floor featured multiple seating areas including timber benches supplied by Urban Street Designs, who also provided the handrails for the steps. The concrete benches were supplied by Evans Concrete and the steps by Marshalls.

Moving on to the viaduct, the play areas were all designed and installed by NAO. They incorporated rubber-crumb resin supplied by Miroad, which proved perfect for the setting as it has give and adds a blast of colour. Many other surfaces were installed including resin-bound gravel from Addagrip and ZERODECK decking by Alfresco Floors. Around the play area, foliage with texture was planted to add interest to little ones while walls were planted with coverage such as ivy. The space has a real community feel to it and is now being enjoyed by the wider public since its completion in mid-2023.

The development doesn’t stop there. Next up for The Stage is the Museum of Shakespeare. A new visitor experience which will be built on the site of The Curtain Playhouse. It will transport guests back to the 16th Century through a series of immersive and interactive experiences. For more information on this, click here.
